Welcome to Koinonia

"The grass is rich and matted, and you cannot see the soil. It holds the rain and the mist, and they seep into the ground, feeding the streams in every kloof. It is well-tended, and not too many cattle feed upon it; not too many fires burn it, laying bare the soil. Stand unshod upon it, for the ground is holy, being even as it came from the Creator."

-Alan Paton: Cry, the Beloved Country
A Group of Residents at Emoyeni
The Poynton Centre
Evening at Emoyeni

Alan Paton's words, written long ago, only touch upon the beauty of the Valley of a Thousand Hills as it still stands today.

Nestled within these hills is Koinonia Conference Centre. Expanses of green lead on to comfortable rooms and communal places, lush gardens and a breathtaking view. It is here that people gather to experience "Koinonia," the Greek description of fellowship and communion.

Established in the 1960's, Koinonia today is a comprehensive non-profit organisation administered by the Vuleka Trust: a board whose trustees are drawn from the Anglican, Methodist and Roman Catholic Churches. Koinonia has always welcomed all denominations and faiths.

Koinonia is situated about halfway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, two of KwaZulu-Natal's greatest cities. It is thus ideally located to offer cozy and affordable accommodation to the province, as well as to guests from further afield who would like to experience community in its warmest form.

The Thousand Hills route is home to many cultural, culinary and artistic attractions - all within easy reach of Koinonia - and Durban's sunny, warm coastline, sports venues, theatres, restaurants and shopping centres are only a short distance away by car.

The Centre will appeal to any organisations wishing to hold conferences, workshops or training sessions away from the workplace, in the rolling, serene reaches of the auspicious Thousand Hills.

Vuleka Trust Koinonia is a project of the Vuleka Trust - an Ecumenical Educational Venture focusing on Development, Justice and Reconciliation.
